What is the Summit Bechtel Reserve (SBR)? 

Experience thrilling adventures like whitewater rafting, rock climbing, skateboarding and BMX, mountain biking, and more at the Summit Bechtel Reserve (SBR), a 10,600-acre outdoor facility nestled in the heart of southern West Virginia, near the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. A premier destination for Scouts and an array of other stakeholders, the Summit offers unique outdoor experiences for all visitors, including traditional summer camp and high-adventure treks; leadership training; family camping; and beautiful facilities for the celebration of milestone events. 

Principal Responsibilities

  • Comfortable paddling and camping in a remote setting without running water/electricity
  • Welcome guests and conduct a gear shakedown water experience in the New River Gorge
  • Pack and load food and equipment in trucks and boats
  • Provide whitewater kayaking instruction
  • Ensure guest safety and provide medical care as needed
  • Interpret the natural and cultural history of the New River Gorge
  • Provide and participate in evening programming
  • This is a summer seasonal position
  • Other duties or projects as assigned by full-time and seasonal SBR leadership
  • Abide by policies and procedure outlined in the SBR Staff Handbook

Benefits for Employees

  • Salaried position (minimum compensation of $1,600.00 per month)
  • Onsite housing (wall tent on concrete platform, with electricity) provided, along with all utilities
  • All meals (three meals per day, seven days per week) provided for duration of employment

Qualifications & Training

  • Eighteen years old or older
  • Wilderness first aid and swiftwater rescue training completed (provided)
  • Confident swimmer
  • Position is contingent on ability to pass river guide and swiftwater rescue training; candidates who cannot complete these requirements will be reassigned
  • Ability to use Microsoft Teams daily for work-related communication and coordination
  • Be or become a registered member of the Scouting America

Physical Requirements

  • Multiple hours a day of either standing, walking, or hiking, and the ability to lift 50-70 lbs.
  • Can be approved to work after receiving a physical examination and fall within the SBR height and weight requirements (HERE)
