What is the Summit Bechtel Reserve (SBR)?
Experience thrilling adventures like whitewater rafting, rock climbing, skateboarding and BMX, mountain biking, and more at the Summit Bechtel Reserve (SBR), a 10,600-acre outdoor facility nestled in the heart of southern West Virginia, near the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. A premier destination for Scouts and an array of other stakeholders, the Summit offers unique outdoor experiences for all visitors, including traditional summer camp and high-adventure treks; leadership training; family camping; and beautiful facilities for the celebration of milestone events.
Principal Responsibilities
- Guide ten to twelve participants through weeklong A.T.V. trek of about fifty miles
- Coach and instruct participants of all levels to safely operate A.T.V.s
- Encourage participants to overcome fears and provide feedback to better their experience
- Conduct daily inspections of equipment and perform basic A.T.V. maintenance
- Guarantee that all riders are properly trained and documented
- Perform off-road motor vehicle rescues and render first aid as needed.
- Assist with the set up and takedown of the A.T.V. facilities and equipment
- Ensure that all equipment is used properly, inventoried, and returned in good repair
- Engage in and contribute to a summer camp environment
- This is a summer seasonal position
- Other duties or projects as assigned by full-time and seasonal SBR leadership
- Abide by policies and procedure outlined in the SBR Staff Handbook

- Salaried position (minimum compensation of $1,600.00 per month)

Qualifications & Training
- Eighteen years old or older for guide; twenty-one years old or older for instructor
- Required for 21+: Complete A.S.I. trainer course (training provided)
- Completion of wilderness first aid, C.P.R., and A.E.D. trainings required (provided)
- Experience riding A.T.V.s and/or teaching/guiding off-road vehicles is required
- Demonstrate proficiency riding an A.T.V.
- Ability to use Microsoft Teams daily for work-related communication and coordination
- Be or become a registered member of the Scouting America
Physical Requirements
- Multiple hours a day of either standing, walking, or hiking, and the ability to lift 50-70 lbs.
- Can be approved to work after receiving a physical examination and fall within the SBR height and weight requirements (HERE)
