Traffic Incident Management / TSMO Intern

Transportation systems management & operations (TSMO) is a subset of transportation engineering. Omaha’s Traffic/TSMO engineering section at HDR is a multi-discipline team of engineering and former first responder professionals that supports traffic incident management (TIM) programs across the United States. TIM is one of many Transportation Systems Management & Operations (TSMO) strategies that lead the transportation industry into the future with a focus on better operating and maintaining the infrastructure we have. TIM is a safety focused specialty that bridges discussions on responder safety and other safety topics between a multi-disciplined audience of roadway responders. If working with the responder community to improve safety interests you, this position is a good fit. 

In the role of a Traffic Incident Management / TSMO Intern, we'll count on you to:

  • Work under the guidance and direct supervision of a senior-level Engineer to assist with researching TIM and TSMO industry trends and technologies
  • Work alongside a multi-discipline team of TIM/TSMO specialists that includes former first responders
  • Gain real-world experience learning from, networking, and coordinating with a multi-disciplined audience of first responders
  • Participate in stakeholder engagement meetings with a multi-disciplined audience of first responders discussing current safety matters
  • Perform other duties as needed such as developing real-world after-action review meeting agendas, PowerPoint content, notes, etc.  

Required Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program
  • Attention to detail a must
  • Must possess strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled as a sophomore, junior or senior at an accredited college or university in the field of criminal justice, emergency management, or related field
  • Applicants must include a resume, cover letter and letter of recommendation from their advisor addressed to the HDR TIM Team
  • A willingness to learn and develop knowledge in Traffic Incident Management
  • Be able to work in both a professional office setting and in the field
  • Possess a strong moral character, attention to detail, problem-solving and communication skills
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
  • Preference given to local candidates
