Elementary School Teacher

Title: Elementary School Teacher 

Reports To: K-12 Principal

Employment Status: Full Time, Exempt

Starting date:  Approximately August 2025

Covert Public Schools is located in Van Buren County, Michigan, home of the Bulldogs. Covert was established in 1865 where rich timberlands initially attracted early settlers to the community. State parks along Lake Michigan provide picnic areas for family get-togethers. Lake Michigan’s summer outdoor recreation opportunities include paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, and fishing. Winter activities include cross-country skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling trails. Activities in between the seasons include biking and hiking trails. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA/BS degree in Education required.
  • Current State teaching certificate required.
  • ZC or ZG endorsement is preferred.
  • Teaching experience is preferred.


GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The classroom teacher will be responsible for teaching Math and Social Studies to students in 4th and 5th grade, planning instruction, setting goals, and implementing curriculum; clear and timely communication to parents regarding standards and students' achievements and deficiencies; teaching good study habits; monitoring and assessing academic processes; working with student specialists, parents, and administration to develop individual education plans, provide independent study plans, and provide academic remediation as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Responsible for student learning.
  2. Maintain a safe and orderly classroom.
  3. Plan and implement classroom instruction using best practices and strategies which effects student learning.
  4. Manage students and set up classroom routines which enhance student learning and reduce abhorrent behavior.
  5. Develop relationships with students and parents that enhance the learning environment.
  6. Communication effectively with parents regarding student achievement and behavior.
  7. Continually improve professional practice and engagement activities to maximize skill set to improve student achievement.
  8. Work collaboratively with colleagues and administration to meet goals of building/district.
  9. Effectively use data to make decisions relevant to instruction.
  10. Knowledgeable content so as to have capacity to modify and develop curriculum to maximize student achievement.
  11. Attend staff meetings and district planned professional development.
  12. Maintain complete and accurate student and academic records.
  13. Order and maintain appropriate levels of textbook and instructional materials and equipment.
  14. Maintain and improve professional knowledge and skills.
  15. Follow directives from the principal.
  16. Sets an example of intellectual curiosity and critical thinking, self- motivation, and self- discipline for students.
  17. Comply with School Board policies and all state and federal regulations.
  18. Contributes to the district’s success by taking on additional responsibilities as needed.

ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District. 
  • In accordance with state law and board policy, no person shall be hired to work in contact with children prior to being fingerprinted and passing a criminal records review and drug screening.

COMPENSATION: Salary will be based on the CEA Agreement, with placement determined by years of relevant experience. A comprehensive benefits package is also included in accordance with district policy and the collective bargaining agreement.
