Wildland Firefighter

Join the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and build a career with purpose. The BLM is looking for dedicated individuals to join our wildland fire engine and suppression crews, a primary, first-on-scene firefighting resource on public lands across the United States.

BLM fire crews are cohesive, multi-skilled teams of professional firefighters who uphold a tradition of excellence. As a crewmember, you will be part of a team that responds to a wide range of incidents, from initial and extended attack fire suppression to supporting prescribed fires that improve the health of our public lands.

This isn't just a job; it's an arduous adventure. The work is physically demanding and requires a high level of fitness, teamwork, and mental toughness. You'll work in extreme conditions, travel extensively, and make a real difference protecting our natural resources and communities.

 

What You'll Do

 

As a member of a 3- to 10-person fire/engine crew, you will specialize in using off-road fire engines/vehicles (ranging from 150 to 2,000-gallon units) to suppress wildfires. Your duties will include:

Performing mobile attack with the engine.

Deploying and managing hose lays, setting up portable pumps, and using water and fire suppression foam.

Constructing firelines with hand tools.

Conducting burnout operations and mopping up hotspots.

Assisting with prescribed burns to manage landscapes.

Patrolling for new fires (both human and lightning-caused).

Promoting fire prevention with the public.

Operating and maintaining specialized equipment, including chainsaws, pumps, and radios.

 

Qualifications & Requirements

 

This is an entry-level opportunity (GW-03) perfect for those looking to start a career in wildland fire.

No experience necessary. To qualify at the GW-03 level, you need either:

Six (6) months of general work experience (in any field), OR

Six (6) months of firefighter training (e.g., as part of a high school curriculum).

Age: Must be 18 years of age or older.

Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Travel: This position requires frequent and extensive travel (76% or more) during the fire season.

Arduous Fitness Requirement: These positions are arduous in nature. You must pass a pre-employment medical exam and a work capacity fitness test (carrying a 45 lb pack for 3 miles within 45 minutes). Crewmembers adhere to a strict physical fitness program.

Other: Must pass a background investigation and a pre-employment drug test.
