Job Description
This position is located in the Water Quality Division- Construction Permitting Section in Oklahoma City.

Basic Purpose
This is an engineering intern position in the Construction Permitting (CPU) Section of the Water Quality Division. The CPU receives applications for construction permits for water and wastewater treatment facilities, distribution systems, and collections systems. The Engineer Intern III-VI will be responsible for: reviewing the application packet (including plans and specifications) to ensure that the proposed project meets state construction standards; reviewing engineering reports for water and wastewater infrastructure projects; and may be required to conduct site-visits as needed for purposes within the construction permitting process. The position requires a positive attitude, a self-motivated work ethic, the ability to work independently, the ability to communicate effectively with customers and co-workers, strong customer service skills, the ability to work with a diverse group of people, good organization skills, grammar and typing skills, the ability to work as a team member, problem solving skills, honesty, discretion, and loyalty. This position reports to the Engineering Manager of the CPU section of the Water Quality Division and performs job tasks under supervision ranging from direct to limited, depending on qualifications, experience, and demonstrated performance.
Typical Functions
- Annually review 200-300 plans and specifications of water and wastewater infrastructure projects for compliance with state construction standards. Projects reviewed will consist primarily of waterline distribution and wastewater collection systems.
- Review hydraulic analyses of water infrastructure projects for compliance with state standards.
- Serve as a point of contact for both internal and external personnel who have questions concerning construction permitting rules, regulations, and the application process.
- Review engineering reports for water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
- Travel may be required for this position.
Travel Requirements
Must have a valid Oklahoma driver's license. This position may involve travel within and outside the State of Oklahoma on an occasional basis. To complete field and out of office duties, this position requires employees to sometimes work long days and to occasionally travel overnight. Employees can earn comp-time or schedule an adjusted work week to compensate for work in excess of 40 hours per week.
Education and Experience
Level III - bachelor’s degree in engineering from a college or university recognized by the Oklahoma State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, in accordance with the standards of the Accreditation Board of Engineering Technology.
Level IV - registration as an Engineer Intern.
Level V - those identified in Level IV plus one year experience in the practice of engineering; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting the completion of a master’s degree in engineering for the required one year of experience in the practice of engineering.
Level VI - those identified in Level IV plus two years of experience in the practice of engineering; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting a master’s degree in engineering for one year of experience in the practice of engineering.
To be consider for this position applicants must be within 60 days of obtaining their degree.
Special Requirements
Persons with out of state registration as an Engineer Intern must transfer their registration with the State of Oklahoma through the Oklahoma State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors no later than six (6) months from the date of appointment
Additional Considerations /Preference: (These cannot eliminate a candidate)
- Registration as a certified Engineer Intern or Professional Engineer.
- Passage of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam or Professional Engineering Exam.
- Degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
- Coursework or experience in PWS or wastewater system construction, design, operations, or regulation.
- Experience in customer service.
- Experience in managing working relationships.
Physical Requirements
- Engineer Interns must be able to operate a personal computer for long periods of time.
- Engineer Interns must be able to walk long distances or spend long hours on their feet.
- Engineer Interns must be able to walk over a variety of terrain such as loose gravel, slopes, excavated areas and construction sites.
- Engineer Interns must be able to climb ladders or stairs.
- Engineer Interns must be able to carry equipment or supplies up to 50 pounds.
- Engineer Interns must be able to handle extremes of heat or cold and inclement weather.
- Engineer Interns may occasionally be exposed to strong odors and possibly short-term exposure to various pollutants.
