Materials Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Auburn Hills, MI

What I liked

I loved the hands-on experience everyday in a department that was directly correlated to what I have been learning about for my degree. The people and environment was extremely welcoming and I was always kept busy with projects, which my co-workers were always able to help out with when I needed it. I was able to go on visits to supplier companies as well, which was really great experience.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't change much because I got such great experience from this internship. My only wish was that I would have been able to connect with other interns more, since I only worked in one department exclusively, but I was still very happy with my department and the people I was able to work with.

Advice

I would advise to always say yes when given the opportunity to do something you haven't experienced before. Throughout the internship people asked if I wanted to tour other parts of the building and see what projects they were working on, as well as go on day trips to other facilities/partner companies. I always said yes and made sure to be willing to be flexible in order to get the best experience possible and see as many things as I could.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Auburn Hills, MI

What I liked

I was able to learn about and apply lean manufacturing (World-Class Manufacturing, or WCM) which is applicable in many workplaces. My work environment was a good balance between headquarters and assembly plants, so I was able to see many parts/processes of automotive assembly, specifically paint.

What I wish was different

I had an additional, more technical project assigned to me after I requested it but I wish it was done sooner so I had more time to work on it.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for more work, and/or explore outside of your department.

Product Develpment Intern

June - August 2020 • Auburn Hills, MI

What I liked

FCA was an exciting company to work at! My tasks mattered to my team, and I was truly making an impact on the word done there. In the Summer of 2020, we were working remote, but FCA sent me a laptop and did the best they could do to still make the experience worthwhile. I learned a lot!

What I wish was different

I wish we would've been able to be in-person, but of course with COVID, I understand.

Advice

Make sure to be bold and talk to other people! Get to know the other interns, your supervisor, manager, and anyone else in the company. Make an impact on the people you talk to by listening attentively and asking questions. If you find yourself feeling bored, go talk to your supervisor and find more to do.

What I liked

Great structure for spread of knowledge and ideas.

What I wish was different

The communication between HR and the staff.

Do not explain in any detail what you wish to do with the future as for me it was misrepresented and a full time offer was not made due to miscommunication.

Design Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Auburn Hills, MI

What I liked

It was a really great atmosphere, everyone was so supportive and I got to work with a team of other interns. We were given a pretty open ended task, which at first was daunting, but after a while was really neat to take on the challenge with our own route we chose to take.

What I wish was different

I wanted to be in a different department—in the materials department, but due to COVID-19, it was completely online and I was placed into a design challenge instead. I still really enjoyed this experience but I was bummed I couldn’t see more of the product development aspect.

Advice

It’s super important to ask questions when you are unsure of things, and people really are happy to help. I always thought I would be a bother if I asked a lot of questions, but I found that people prefer you do ask questions rather than try and guess at something.

What I liked

FCA took steps to ensure everyone’s safety in the light of the global pandemic and provided me with a laptop and phone to work from home. The team I was placed in is full of wonderful people, and people all across the organization offer often reach out to offer their help if they think you need it.

What I wish was different

I only wish I had applied last year so I could have experienced working in-person with everyone!

Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask questions! It may seem daunting at first but it’s better to reach out for help than struggle alone.

Transmission & Driveline Quality

May - August 2019 • Toledo, OH

What I liked

Support from supervisors and colleagues. Able to see manufacturing processes first hand. Be able to share ideas on improvement and highlight quality issues. FCA also had a number of intern events such as test driving different cars, etc. There were also a lot of seminars related to stress management, engineering, etc. so there is a lot to learn.

What I wish was different

I wish I was at a location in Michigan closer to other interns. I also wish the housing accommodations were better. Lastly I wish my assignment was more hands on with cars rather than manufacturing of individual components.

Advice

Ask questions to HR and recruiters about the different opportunities you can have.

Supply Chain Intern

May - August 2019 • Auburn Hills, MI

What I liked

I loved every single part of my internship this past summer! I was not only able to network and learn from so many people within the company, but i had the opportunity to see the automotive industry in a whole new light! It was the most amazing experience I ever had!

What I wish was different

There isn’t much that I wish would have been different! Honestly, I wish i could have stayed longer in my internship so that i could see all the work i put into it. I really enjoyed every minute of my internship and loved the interaction between the other interns and how we were able to bond throughout our journey together. We helped one another and it was a great experience.

Advice

If there are some who feel hesitant about applying for an internship out of state, i would really try to consider moving and finding experience where you can! Going to my internship with FCA was the best decision i had ever made for myself. I not only came back with the experience i was looking for, but with a full time offer to return once i graduate. It’s something that i will cherish forever!
