This was an amazing experience as I gained exposure to the medical field and was able to see doctor-patient interactions first hand. I learned how and emergency room operates and gained extensive knowledge in terms of emergency medicine. Working with physicians firsthand was a valuable experience!

What I wish was different

This job required me to work 12 hour day/night shifts which could be overwhelming at times.

Anyone who is looking to gain exposure to the medical field or needs clinical hours for PA/medical school should consider becoming a medical scribe!

What I wish was different

Advice

It may seem overwhelming at first because you are dealing with patient medical records but do the best you can and don’t be afraid to ask the physician if you are unclear about anything. They are much less intimidating than they seem!

Medical Scribe

April 2018 - October 2019 • Libertyville, IL

What I liked

The experience I got as a scribe will stick with me as a continue my pursuit of medical school. Since the ED is open 24/7, it offered very flexible shifts and I was able to work either early mornings, or I could even work overnight shifts.

What I wish was different

I wish it paid more. For the amount of work we do as scribes, the pay doesn't seem just

Advice

Don't go into the job for the letters of recommendation or the "resume builder". Take the job seriously. Scribes help doctors in so many ways and even though it isn't always apparent, we help ease the burden of charting for the doctors. We allow them to spend more face-to-face time with patients. Be professional and take it seriously.

Emergency Department Scribe

July 2019 • Bridgeton, MO

What I liked

I loved the first-hand experience of the healthcare field. You see a wide variety of patients presenting with a huge range of ailments. Working with an ER Physician side-by-side lets you understand the healthcare process.

What I wish was different

Advice

This is a great experience to get before applying to medical school. I might even say it is essential as this job will help you determine if you would fit in the healthcare field. So I recommend this job to those that are on the fence between deciding to pursue medicine or other clinical healthcare jobs.

Medical Scribe

May 2019 • Sarasota, FL

What I liked

The ability to work one-on-one with actual doctors in the community is extremely valuable. You also learn a lot about how institutionalized medicine works, and major health issues in the community, and you gain empathy for the sick and ill.

What I wish was different

The pay rate is rather low for the intensity and skills needed for the work.

Advice

Great if you're interested in the medical field - and having some requisite knowledge certainly helps. Be ready to learn lots of information, and fast!

What I liked

I loved the doctors that I worked with and truly learned so much about the thought process behind diagnosing and treating patients.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been better staffed so I wasn't so overwhelmed with the number of shifts when school came back around.

Advice

Ask your doc questions about why they decided to go that route with diagnostic tests or with treatment. They have so much information and many of them love to teach!

What I liked

I love the clinical experience as I am a pre-medicine student. The doctors I work with are all super friendly as well and want to teach.

What I wish was different

The scheduling has been very frustrating. The company requires a very specific availability and during the school year this is hard to meet.

Advice

I would advise new applicants to have a goal area they want to work in and push for that. The job will be much more engaging if you are interested in where you are working.

I liked working with the patients and the providers. Both were friendly. Largely primary care based, so I got to see a wide variety of patients. I very quickly learned how to become more efficient and a lot of useful medical terminology and shorthand.

What I wish was different

I wish hours were more flexible during the school year and I wish pay were a bit higher.

Advice

Medical Scribe

May - August 2018 • Bay Shore, NY

What I liked

I pan on attending graduate school and becoming a physician's assistant in the near future, so an opportunity to work as a medical scribe in an emergency room amongst trained medical professionals like medical doctors, nurse practitioners and physician's assistants, the experience simply cannot be matched. I really enjoyed being side-by-side with these professionals, not only learning directly from them via word of mouth but also from patient's from all walks of life. On the slower days, I would talk to medical professionals, ask questions and get the inside scoop on the inner-workings of emergency rooms, medical school and graduate school. I have greatly expanded my medicinal knowledge and have far surpassed some of the experience of my peers, setting me apart for future graduate school applications. I am truly blessed to have been chosen for this experience and look forward to continuing my position as a medical scribe after I finish my undergraduate here at Brockport.

What I wish was different

I wish there was improved technology for scribes in the hospital I was working at because the computers we used to take the doctor's notes were constantly dying, despite being fully charged and would sometimes lose connection. Oftentimes when I lost connection to the server/Wifi, I would lose the chart I was on and would have to redo the entire chart and ask the doctor all the information again because I had lost the notes I took.

Advice

Some advice I have regarding this experience would be to act confident, ask questions and be quick on your feet. The last thing a doctor or medical professional wants to see is lack of confidence in a scribe because now they are worried you will mess up their charts. Regarding the second piece of advice, asking questions is probably the most important. Oftentimes as scribes we don't get all the information in the room when the doctor is assessing the patient and so if we do not hear something that is said, it is important that we ask the doctor or medical professional so that no mistakes are made on the chart.

Medical Scribe

What I liked

I really have enjoyed the experience that I am getting from working in the CHOP Urgent Care. I am able to see what is like to be a doctor and get exposure to interesting things. Also, the training for this job was extensive but I really enjoyed it because I now know much more about the medical field things related to medicine and health.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to work more of the summer. I had a lot of time over the summer, but since it is at an Urgent Care, the shifts were only 4:00 pm- 10:00 pm on weekdays and 6-7 hour shifts on the weekends.

Advice

I would recommend that if you are interested in doing this, apply early and get going on the training process early. The testing/training process takes some time so start early so you can get started working sooner!
