Seasonal Sales Representative

June - August 2021 • Everett, WA

What I liked

The smaller work environment allowed me to be trained easier and meet some awesome coworkers. In addition to this, it was my first real office job so getting a desk and computer while small had a meaningful impact on me. The job, in general, was fairly engaging and I feel as though I learned and built on a lot of soft skills

What I wish was different

There was some confusion initially on how many hours I was supposed to work that put some stress on my schedule but I was able to talk to my boss and sort it out.

Advice

When I came into the Penske office for the first time I truly had no idea what I was going to be doing, they needed help on so many fronts. I was nervous at first that it would take too long for me to learn all the details of my position but I just accepted the fact that i was going to be wrong and mess up a lot and pushed through that uncomfortable sensation to really have a meaningful experience, and get paid.

moving advisor

June 2020 • Reading, PA

What I liked

I loved the variety in calls that I received.

What I wish was different

I could have used more training on how to handle some of the less frequent parts of the job. I was part of the first remote training class so this was probably very different.

Advice

Don't just send a call to someone else if its difficult. Own it and learn!

What I wish was different

There weren’t any aspects of the job I wish were different. The position assisted me in gaining a better understanding of the company’s mission and how to further develop my skills in sales and customer service.

Advice

I would advise any new hires to keep attentive to the sales process when training for the position and the process of solving any and all customer issues with the best attitude possible.

Business Intelligence Summer Intern

May - August 2019 • Reading, PA

What I liked

I liked the other interns I worked with as well as the Penske employees in the Business Intelligence department. I enjoyed doing real work that would be used by the company rather than just busy work. I was offered opportunities to develop professionally by attending presentations. Additionally, I liked being able to apply certain aspects of my learning to a real job.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have done work with systems that is more hands-on. I did dashboard design, which was all at a computer and didn't require deep knowledge in computer engineering.

Advice

It's really convenient and fulfilling to intern at a company that is located near one's permanent address. You save money by living at home and you don't have to be totally self-reliant.

Management Associate

June - September 2019 • Portland, OR

What I liked

I loved the work environment and the diverse set of skills I learned that I know will help me in the future.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been able to take a couple of paid vacation days. Working all summer can get exhausting¡

Advice

The most important thing this experience taught me is that it is important to look for opportunities outside of ones area of study. This was certainly a business internship yet the skills I learned as a political science major were priceless. It is important to be exposed to all sorts of career paths.

June - August 2019 • Franklin Park, IL

What I liked

I loved the working environment, my manager was very skilled in training his employees and giving us adequate responsibilities.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had lasted longer, to get more time to develop my skills within the company

Advice

Be open to stressful situations with a million things going on at once, that is the nature of this job and you have to be able to roll with the punches and constantly be in solution mode rather than create further issues. Also be open to not getting everything right immediately. It will be a constant learning experience.

Human Resources Intern

May - August 2019 • Reading, PA

What I liked

Penske, as a whole, is a family-focused company. They have a community mentality that is not unilateral in today's world. In all honesty, if I was looking for a full-time job in Human Resources, I would apply here. They are helpful and very down-to-earth. For example, I got to meet both the CFO and the president of the company. Both were very lovely people.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have worked there longer and seen my project come to fruition. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

Advice

Apply for any and all internships you can. I'm an interpreting major but I was a human resources intern at Penske for a summer. Don't let your major define where you apply.
