Advice

I encourage everyone to go learn what its like to work in industry! In my college experience, professors always encouraged research positions and graduate school, but I would have never thought that I would enjoy working in industry unless I gave it a try.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

What I liked

I liked having real full-time level projects with real monetary gains/savings for the company. Certainly not busy work. Having a company and boss willing to spend ten's of thousands of dollars on your designs that should benefit the company even more is very confidence inspiring and rewarding.

What I wish was different

More consistant workload. When designing and purchasing equipment I was very busy. Waiting for items to come in from machine shops I had some slow days I would look for more work.

Advice

Confidence is key. Theyre not looking for a student to come in and act like a know it all. There's a middle ground, but I would error on the side of caution. Watch, listen and learn from the leaders in the company. When its your time to knockout a project, be very thorough. Put together a quick powerpoint explaining the objective, results and most importantly your reasoning for your conclusions/thought process.

I loved being able to go out on the floor and see the manufacturing process. I wasn't always sitting behind a computer. It was very hands on.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to have had more projects.

If GM offers you a job and you're passionate about what they do, take it. They treat their employees extremely well and I got to learn so much.

Don't be afraid to step out of your boundary. As an intern it's your time to shine and show large companies what you can do and what you can bring to the table.

Front End Software Development Intern

What I liked

I liked the facility I worked at. The Renaissance Center is an impressive building and the fact that it is right at the heart of Detroit makes it more enticing to work there. Also, the work I completed there was directly related to the software engineering concepts I have been learning at Manchester University.

What I wish was different

I wish the traffic for getting in and out of the city did not exist because I had to spend two hours commuting every workday. However, the software problems I was solving and the employees I was working with made the internship a valuable and memorable experience.

Advice

Stay connected with the people you meet through internships and co-ops. These connections can lead to many future employment opportunities!

Advice

Try not to balance academics along with two jobs with demanding work hours. Fortunately, I had the drive to work and gain college credits at a local community college, but it was very exhausting.

Where I lived. Also, office was a tad bleak, but I’m biased toward sunlit rooms.

Advice

Always continue learning and develop a broad knowledge of your field; the details will become more important depending on the scope of a certain project. Also, never be afraid to outsource assistance. A team of engineers will always outdo a single engineer in a specific task.

CAD Design Intern

What I liked

Working for GM was a great opportunity to work in a big industry and be valued for your work and not just a temporary intern. They offered lots of training and paired you up with a mentor who was always willing to help when you were stuck on a project and was overall a great learning experience. You are accountable for getting your work done for your group as well as working with other interns on special projects.

What I wish was different

You are assigned to work in one specific group, which is great over the time period because you learn a lot about that particular section, but I wish there would've been a chance to see what other groups jobs entailed to find out which area you like best when returning.

Advice

Definitely take advantage of the intern events and do as many tours as you can. It provides a lot of exposure to things that even some of the regular employees don't get the chance to do.

This was my best co-op experience, I actually learned a lot about the ongoing process of tying together engineering on the manufacturing floor and software development.

What I wish was different

Not really much, my last co-op experience pales in comparison so since I only have that to compare to I have no complaints.

Advice

Never stop learning, you don't know everything and sometimes you might think you know something but there could be something that you are missing.

What I liked

I loved everything imaginable about working for General Motors. Not only did I learn the importance of my job through hands-on tasks, but also increased my knowledge on mass-production in the automotive industry. It got me excited for my future in an engineering career.

What I wish was different

I have no critical complaints, however, tours of different plants should have been more spread out as it conflicted with my work schedule.

By far one of the most useful internships. I learned a great deal of information and had fun while learning it.
