The mission of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation is to provide safe and enjoyable recreational and interpretive opportunities for all New York State residents and visitors and to be responsible stewards of our valuable natural, historic and cultural resources.
The New York State park system is one of the state’s greatest treasures. Today it totals 250-plus properties, including parks, historic sites, beaches, boat launches, trails, campsites, and golf courses encompassing 360,000 acres. From the iconic Niagara Falls to the jaw-dropping gorges of the Finger Lakes and the beautiful Thousand Islands region to the oceanfront beaches of Long Island, New York’s parks and historic sites provide year-round, affordable outdoor recreation and education to 84.1 million visitors annually.
