Library Custodial Worker 3

This is routine manual and semi-skilled work in the performance of a variety of custodial and cleaning tasks in and around public buildings.  Work is performed as a leadworker under the direction of the Library Facility & Maintenance Coordinator and the supervision of the the Library Facilities Manager.  The employee assigns tasks to Custodial Worker 2's and performs assigned tasks subject to established methods and routines. The employee is expected to identify and coordinate special projects, as well as suggest improvements to established methods and routines. The work involves assisting in the creation and on-going evaluation of work plans to ensure effective custodial service. Work is reviewed primarily through inspection and observation of Central Library and project locations.

Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 3:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as a custodial leadworker           

  • Perform a full range of custodial tasks.
  • Assign day to day tasks to Custodial Worker 2’s.
  • Inspect job performance of Custodial Worker 2’s in their assigned work areas and provide training and corrective feedback as necessary.
  • Check in with Events staff, and assists in room set ups and moving furniture.

Provide custodial service to neighborhood libraries

  • In absence of maintenance staff, provide emergency custodial and maintenance service to neighborhood libraries.
  • Perform special custodial projects.
  • Assist in the inventories, orders, and maintenance of neighborhood library janitorial supplies.

Perform routine and special custodial projects

  • Identify facilities and areas which require special projects, such as floor re-finishing, carpet extraction, and other routine custodial projects.
  • Identify supplies and equipment necessary for special projects.  Order and coordinate supplies and equipment as required for special projects.
  • Maintain custodial equipment on a daily basis, and alert Library Facilities & Maintenance Coordinator when equipment or facilities require repair.

Perform related work as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years of experience performing diverse custodial or related work (comparable to that gained as a Custodial Worker 2 with the City of Madison) in a large facility that included the care of hard and soft floor coverings, wall surfaces, and building maintenance systems (low-pressure boilers and air handling systems). 
 


If an applicant does not possess the specific requirements outlined above, HR will review the application materials to determine if the applicant possesses the following equivalent experience:

Four (4) years experience applying the following:

  • Materials, equipment, supplies, and methods commonly used in a building cleaning operation (to include a variety of hard and soft floor coverings, wall surfaces, and building equipment).
  • Cleaning devices, and their care and maintenance requirements.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid driver's license.

Employees will be required to mix chemicals for cleaning solutions.



Physical Requirements:

Employees in this position must be able to lift/carry heavy equipment and furnishings weighing up to 50 pounds and perform work while walking/standing for a large percentage of time. In addition, they must be able to frequently bend, twist, squat, climb (including ladders), reach and perform strenuous manual tasks. The employee must have the ability to safely operate a maintenance truck. This position requires the employee to work outdoors in all types of weather.
