About us:

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and much more across the country.

Program Description:

A total of three Resource Stewardship Interns will assist with all programs managed by the USACE Naugatuck River Basin, located in Middlebury, CT.  This is primarily an outdoor/field position.

The Naugatuck River Basin has seven projects in CT, including Hancock Brook Lake, Hop Brook Lake, Colebrook River Lake, Black Rock Lake, Northfield Brook Lake, Thomaston Dam and the Stamford Hurricane Barrier.  The projects provide recreation activities including trail bike riding, model airplane flying, hiking, picnicking, swimming, fishing, bird watching and more. Natural Resource activities include wildlife habitat management, invasive species removal, bird and bat box maintenance, and others. 

Naugatuck River Basin natural resource management objectives and major duties include:

·      Maintain a diversity of productive wildlife habitat for native species through proactive removal of invasive species, protection of wetland and upland resources, as well as creation and maintenance of native pollinator habitat.

·      Preservation of conservation concern species habitat.

·      Trail work, boundary surveys, forest inventories, painting, kiosk, picnic table, bird/bat box building and related inventories.

·      Completing natural resource and forest inventories.

·      Implement natural resource management in a safe manner to protect the public.

Working hours are flexible and can range from a few hours each day or up to 12 hours a day, not exceeding 80 hours per two week period.

Naugatuck River Basin will provide SCA interns with CPR and First Aid training, as well as Defensive Driving Training.

Location is within 3 hours of Boston, 2 hours of New York City, 2 hours from Catskill Mountain hiking, 30 minutes from Kent Falls State Park, and 1.5 hours from the Berkshires, Mount Washington and surrounding hiking areas. CT has many local farms, ice cream, coffee shops and bakeries to visit.

Housing is not provided at the site for this internship.

     Note: all allowances subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes

*Internship positions with the US Army Corps of Engineers will receive a roundtrip travel  allowance reimbursement that reflects the actual roundtrip travel costs from their 'home' to the site.  The reimbursement amount is based upon total distance (mileage) travelled and current federal per diem rates. Interns are required to submit an expense report to SCA with documented round-trip travel costs for reimbursement. The requested reimbursement amount is capped at $650.

Additional Information: 

• Must be eligible to serve as an AmeriCorps Member. This includes: Being a citizen, permanent resident, or national of the United States
• Being at least 18 years or older
• Having a high school diploma or equivalent
• Being willing to undergo National Service Criminal History Check, including criminal background, sex offender and FBI checks.
